Man & Dog: A Picture that Moved the World

Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love

Man & Dog: A Picture that Moved the World

John Unger just wanted a friend to take a nice photo of him and his 19-year-old arthritic dog, Schoep, before it was too late. He got that photo -- and world validation, too. When Unger's friend, professional photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, posted the unusual photo -- of Unger holding his sleeping dog in the waters of Lake Superior -- on her Facebook page it went viral. A week later, the photo had been shared 156,911 times, prompted 28,695 comments and received more than a quarter million "likes". Now, Unger shares how the photo -- and his dog -- have both been turning points in his life: { read more }

The Ripple of One Small Act

A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees. The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them kind themselves.

- Amelia Earhart -

The Ripple of One Small Act

When Hilde Back sponsored a young, rural Kenyan student, she thought nothing of it. She certainly never expected to hear from him, but years later she did. Now a Harvard graduate and a Human Rights Lawyer for the United Nations, Chris Mburu decided to find the stranger that changed his life. Inspired by her generosity, he started a scholarship program of his own and named it for his former benefactor. Using a strong narrative, the film interweaves seemingly separate lives into a cohesive whole. With clarity and grace this short video bears witness to the ripple effect a single action can create. { read more }

Families Held Together By Love ... & Skype

Somewhere we know that without silence words lose their meaning, that without listening speaking no longer heals, that without distance closeness cannot cure.

- Henri Nouwen -

Families Held Together By Love ... & Skype

We live in a world in which some of the people we are closest to are often not near us at all. When we document our day-to-day existence in photographs and Instagrams, these people are absent. Their presence in our lives is missing from our digital memories. Photographer John Clang's series Being Together seeks to correct this. Using Skype and projectors, he captures families visually as they are virtually. "In these images," Clang says, "I am enabling families to remember these strange moments of togetherness with the technology presently available." This article shares striking examples of his work and its impact. { read more }

Living with Just Enough

Abundance is a fact of nature. It is a fundamental law of nature, that there is enough and it is finite. Its finiteness is no threat; it creates a more accurate relationship that commands respect, reverence, and managing those resources with the knowledge that they are precious and in ways that do the most good for the most people.

- Lynne Twist -

Living with Just Enough

"By now we are all extremely familiar with the litany of challenges we face as a global species... We know there will be no easy fixes, no panaceas, but nevertheless as we try to set priorities and search for the most promising ways to approach these problems, many of us find ourselves looking to different cultures and to earlier eras for inspiration. In this regard, the Edo period of Japan has a lot to teach us." Artist and designer Azby Brown offers simple lessons in sustainability from this unique period. { read more }
