The New Farmers

The more we pour the big machines, the fuel, the pesticides, the herbicides, the fertilizer and chemicals into farming, the more we knock out the mechanism that made it all work in the first place.

- David Brower -

The New Farmers

With an environment in crisis, a new generation of young farmers is taking their action from the streets back to the soil. In this article from Orion Magazine, writer Lauren Markham explores the motivations that have driven this newest generation of farmers to relinquish the comforts of urban life, and to take the reins of a new farming movement. { read more }

The Gifts of Hibernation

To have faith is to trust yourself to the water. When you swim you don't grab hold of the water, because if you do you will sink and drown. Instead you relax, and float.

- Alan Watts -

The Gifts of Hibernation

"So hibernation is a threefold time. It is a time for retreat and replenishment... a time for our wordless philosophy to finally be born...a time for our hidden destiny to whisper in our heart, You're not forgotten. I'm still here. We're in this together." For all of us who feel swept up in the buzz of achieving rather than being, Andreana A. Lefton's sincere reflection on rest and integration is a treasure trove of welcome wisdom. { read more }

Why Happiness Is The Wrong Pursuit

If you want happiness for an hour -- take a nap. If you want happiness for a day -- go fishing. If you want happiness for a year -- inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime -- help someone else.

- Chinese Proverb -

Why Happiness Is The Wrong Pursuit

"On some abstract level, we know that money and other outward signs of success won't ultimately make us happy -- perhaps because we know wealthy or famous or powerful people who are deeply unhappy -- but on another level, we don't really believe it ... or at least we don't believe it applies to us. Why do we experience such a disconnect between what we know to be true in the abstract and what we believe is true for us?" Christine Carter thinks a big part of the answer lies in our flawed pursuit of happiness. This article shares more... { read more }

Using Brain Science To Transform Schools

The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.

- Carl Jung -

Using Brain Science To Transform Schools

After Sept 11th 2001, child trauma psychiatrist Pamela Cantor was hired to assess the emotional impact of the attacks on New York school children. What she discovered surprised her. "From lower Manhattan to the Bronx, most of the children I met were traumatized less by what they had witnessed that terrifying morning than by the experience of growing up in poverty," says Pamela. She found that "one in five children in NYC met the criteria for a full-blown psychiatric disorder, and 68 percent had exposure to trauma sufficient to impair their functioning in school." This discovery led Pamela to found Turnaround for Children in 2002, a nonprofit which partners with public schools to address teaching and learning obstacles arising from the stress of poverty. When a social entrepreneur evaluation organization investigated Pamela's work, they were amazed: "When we see organizations who address the whole child and their brain development, we take note. Turnaround is one of those organizations." { read more }
