Snail Mail My Email

To send a letter is a good way to go somewhere without moving anything but your heart.

- Phyllis Theroux -

Snail Mail My Email

"Snail mail fascinates me," says Ivan Cash. "There's something warm and fuzzy about coming home and checking the mail and getting a letter from a friend. It's such an intimate for of communication, especially in today's world." But Cash didn't anticipate the exponential scale that followed. This interview in the Wall Street Journal shares more. { read more }

The Most Beautiful Street in the World

Beauty is whatever gives joy.

- Edna St. Vincent Millay -

The Most Beautiful Street in the World

"There are an estimated 11 million miles of paved road on Earth, forming a sprawling network which some might say represents humanity's conquest of the otherwise inaccessibly wild landscape. But, ironically it seems, the most beautiful streets in world just might be the ones that more closely resemble the untamed. With so many scenic streets in cities across the globe determining which of all is prettiest might seem an impossible task. But hard as it may be, there is one street in Brazil which has earned that distinction among an international audience -- for its impressive natural beauty." This article shares photos and more details. { read more }

L'Equip Petit: The Little Team

Time is a game played beautifully by children.

- Heraclitus -

L'Equip Petit: The Little Team

"Zero. We always end at zero," muses Haritz, goalkeeper of the very special football team profiled in this delightful video."We haven't scored a goal yet, but we've almost scored them," reports Ruth with a wistful hopefulness. The other teams do substantially better. Always. But the lopsided scoreboard tallies have hardly dimmed their passion for the game. "We don't even care if we don't score because we have fun," says Pol. "We'll score when we grow old." For now, they have better things to do. Like play. { read more }

Finding Time: Slowness is an Act of Resistance

Leave the door open to the unknown, the door into the dark. That's where the most important things come from, where you yourself came from, and where you will go.

- Rebecca Solnit -

Finding Time: Slowness is an Act of Resistance

"The four horseman of my Apocalypse are called Efficiency, Convenience, Profitability, and Security, and in their names, crimes against poetry, pleasure, sociability, and the very largeness of the world are daily, hourly, constantly carried out. These marauding horsemen are deployed by technophiles, advertisers, and profiteers to assault the nameless pleasures and meanings that knit together our lives and expand our horizons." In this lyrical, thought-provoking essay Rebecca Solnit discusses what we lose with modernity's speed -- and what can be reclaimed by a return to slowness. { read more }
