An Interview with the World's Happiest Man

It isn't what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about.

- Dale Carnegie -

An Interview with the World's Happiest Man

Matthieu Ricard, an author with a PhD in cell genetics, is also a Buddhist monk who serves as the Dalai Lama's French interpreter. In this interview, Matthieu speaks to us about his book, "Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill." He explores how individuals tend to spend considerable time and energy pursuing external circumstances in the hopes of attaining happiness, but explains that those states are constantly changing and individuals often have little control over them. He shares his approach to cultivating the right inner conditions instead and how to develop the skills needed to attain more stable happiness. He also delves into the physical and psychological effects of meditation. { read more }

The Soul of Teamwork

Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.

- Andrew Carnegie -

The Soul of Teamwork

Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson -- by percentage (.738) the winningest coach in NBA history -- is renowned for his ability to turn megastars into team players. And his secret is spiritual. "The most effective way to forge a winning team," he writes in Sacred Hoops: Spiritual Lessons of a Hardwood Warrior, "is to call on the players' need to connect with something larger than themselves." He goes on to say, "The fact is, selflessness is the soul of teamwork. It doesn't matter how good individual players are -- they can't compete with a team that is awake and aware and trusts each other. We're all susceptible to falling down and being exposed. But when we lose our fear of that, and look to each other, then vulnerability turns into strength." { read more }

History's Finest Letters of Motherly Advice

A mother's heart is the child's classroom

- Henry Ward Beecher -

History's Finest Letters of Motherly Advice

"Last year, we celebrated Father's Day with an omnibus of history's finest letters of fatherly advice, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, Jackson Pollock, and Neil Armstrong. Later adding to them was more timeless epistolary advice from notable dads like Ted Hughes, Sherwood Anderson, Richard Dawkins, and Charles Dickens. It's only fitting to honor Mother's Day with a similarly spirited selection of history's finest motherly advice, spanning nearly half a millennium of poignant and prescient counsel from notable moms." A mother's heart is a patchwork of love.

- Author Unknown -

What My Mother Gave Me

"Mother's Day is this Sunday. While some people are racking their brains to think of the perfect way to show their love and appreciation for Mom, a group of distinguished women recently flipped that script and wrote about the most profound gift their own moms gave to them. Their essays are collected in the new book What My Mother Gave Me: Thirty-One Women on the Gifts That Mattered Most." This article from NPR shares more. { read more }
